Squashed Hat

15:00 minute performance, Live Cinema, Arcola Theatre, London, 20 April 2008

An improvised performance collage, presented by LUX as part of a night of film performances, curated by Guy Sherwin; marking the launch of Guy Sherwin: Optical Sound Films, (a book/DVD published by LUX) and Live Cinema: A Contemporary Reader, (published by San Francisco Cinematheque).

Squashed Hat was made using the light bulb from Malcolm Le Grice's Castle One (1966), the sewing machine from Annabel Nicolson's Reel Time (1973), and the mirror from Guy Sherwin's Man With Mirror (1976); together with fragments and re-enactments of the evenings preceding performances of (S[i]gns) by Lynn Loo, Samantha Rebello & Olivier Rodriguez, and (Untitled #4) by Emma Hart & Ben Drew.

"The launch went very well. It culminated with video artist Riccardo Iacono batting frozen peas thrown by the audience with a mirror (taken from my mirror film), in a gentle parody of a possible canon of UK experimental film"

Guy Sherwin
